Salamanca, capital of the province with the same name, is part of the region of Castile and León It is situated in the west of Spain, at about 200 kms from Madrid and about 100 from Portugal.

 

In 1988 the city was declared WORLD HERITAGE CITY by the UNESCO (amongst its extraordinary monuments we can highlights its two Cathedrals, the San Esteban Convent, the University, the Monterrey Palace, the Clerecía Church or its famous Plaza Mayor (Main Square)) and in 2002, Salamanca was European City of Culture.

 

            The culture, the business and tourism are the bases of  a city which continues being mainly a university city: its University is one of the oldest in the world (1218), converting Salamanca in one the favourite destinations to study the Spanish Language and Culture.  Its great population of students makes it a young and dynamic city, appealing as well for its night life which offers a great variety of leisure.

 

 

It has a population of about 160,000 inhabitants,it  has its festivities in June (12th) in honour of San Juan de Sahagún and from 8 to 15 September in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Vega, offering the visitors also the opportunity to enjoy some genuine celebrations of Salamanca such as el Lunes de Aguas o El Mariquelo;  the Holy Week in Salamanca was declared of Internatiional Touristic Interest in 2003 and since 2005 the International Festival of Arts of Castile and León is organized.

 

 

From Salamanca trip to cities with an historical-artistic interest in the region can be organized (León, Segovia, Burgos…) or in the same province important cultural places can be visited (Béjar, Ledesma, Alba de Tormes, etc.)or villages as picturesque such as La Alberca or Candelario, which have conserved traditions some more than a hundred years old.
